Violent Crime Falls 10 Percent in First Half of 2024, FBI Data Show
Property offenses fell more than 13 percent based on data from over 16,000 law enforcement agencies covering 94 percent of U.S. jurisdictions

- FBI quarterly data reported a 10.3% decrease in violent crime from January through June 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
- Murder fell 22.7%, rape dropped 17.7%, robbery declined 13.6% and aggravated assault decreased 8.1% in the first half of 2024.
- Property offenses, including burglary and vehicle theft, collectively dropped 13.1% during that period.
- More than 16,000 agencies at state, local, higher education and tribal levels submitted voluntary reports covering 94.3% of U.S. jurisdictions.
- The FBI’s annual Crime in the Nation report for 2024 is scheduled for September 2025 and will provide a full year-end analysis.
