Overview
- The Stuttgart demonstration for the five suspects in the Ulm case took place Oct. 24–25 and drew organisers’ estimates of about 1,000 people and police estimates of roughly 600–700.
- Police said masked participants set off pyrotechnics, threw paint-filled bottles and assaulted officers, leaving three police officers injured and prompting multiple arrests and the use of pepper spray.
- The five accused — who say they belong to or are linked with Palestine Action Germany and include Irish, British, Spanish and German nationals — remain in pretrial detention on charges including property damage, trespass and alleged membership in a criminal association.
- Supporters and a demonstration spokesperson criticised the length of the defendants’ pretrial detention and the courtroom setup, noting a bulletproof glass barrier that limits direct communication between defendants and their lawyers during hearings.
- Interior Minister Manuel Hagel publicly condemned attacks on police and said prosecutors will investigate, a response that could lead to further charges and influence how police handle future pro-Palestine solidarity protests.
