Violence Halts James Concert in Faridpur as Authorities Cancel Show

The attack reflects a widening pattern of disruptions to cultural events in Bangladesh, with investigators yet to identify who organised the assault.

Overview

  • Organisers said a group of outsiders tried to force their way into the Faridpur Zilla School venue and hurled bricks and stones minutes before the show was to begin.
  • The convener, Dr Mostafizur Rahman Shamim, announced the cancellation around 10 pm on the district administration’s instruction citing law-and-order concerns.
  • Local reports counted roughly 15–30 injured, many of them students who were near the front and later helped push the attackers back.
  • James was escorted out under security and was unharmed, and police opened an inquiry with no immediate arrests or confirmed affiliations of the assailants.
  • The incident comes after recent attacks on cultural organisations such as Chhayanaut and Udichi and has led visiting artists to cancel or depart citing safety risks.
