Vineyard Wind Begins Power Production in Major Milestone for US Offshore Wind Industry

Despite challenges including rising costs and local opposition, the project off the coast of Massachusetts is set to power approximately 400,000 homes once fully operational.

  • Vineyard Wind, the first large-scale offshore wind farm in the US, has started producing electricity, marking a significant milestone for the industry.
  • The project, located off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, currently has one turbine delivering about 5 megawatts of power to the grid, with plans to install a total of 62 turbines with 800 megawatts of capacity by the end of the year.
  • Once completed, Vineyard Wind will be able to power approximately 400,000 homes.
  • Despite this progress, the offshore wind industry in the US has faced challenges, including soaring costs, high interest rates, supply chain delays, and local opposition, leading to the cancellation of several large planned wind farms.
  • The Biden administration has made offshore wind a priority, aiming to create an industry from scratch, but the US remains far behind Europe, which has already installed more than 32,000 megawatts of capacity in its waters.
