Vincent Thomas Bridge Closes for 16 Months as $750 Million Deck Replacement Begins

Caltrans says accelerated concrete fatigue from heavy port truck traffic required a full shutdown to speed essential safety and seismic upgrades.

Overview

  • The bridge closed just after midnight Saturday, Nov. 7, and will remain shut for about 16 months with work targeted to finish around March 2028 under a $750 million Caltrans contract.
  • Crews will replace the entire concrete deck and also upgrade the median barrier, railings, fencing, signage, utilities, and seismic sensors to extend the span’s service life.
  • Motorists and trucks are being routed onto I-110, I-710, State Route 103 and Harry Bridges Boulevard while Caltrans and city crews completed detour-route resurfacing, added temporary signals and will station traffic-control officers at 18 key intersections.
  • San Pedro residents and small businesses warn of longer commutes and reduced customer traffic, with some locals dubbing the shutdown "Harborgeddon" and commuters saying normal 15-minute trips could double.
  • Caltrans cites a 2021 inspection that found the deck had fallen from fair to poor and says a full closure was chosen because partial or night-only work would have stretched the project to multiple years given heavy truck loading that makes concrete fatigue worse.
