Villanova Active-Shooter Alert Deemed 'Cruel Hoax' as Campus Is Cleared

Overview

  • Villanova issued a NOVA Alert around 4:30 p.m., instructing people to shelter in place, barricade doors, and avoid Scarpa Hall at the law school.
  • Radnor Township police, Villanova Public Safety, Pennsylvania State Police and federal partners conducted building sweeps, found no injuries or firearms, and lifted the shelter-in-place around 6:30 p.m.
  • University President Rev. Peter M. Donohue said there was no active shooter and apologized to first-year students and families after orientation events were upended.
  • Gov. Josh Shapiro labeled the incident a swatting hoax and directed state police to help identify the caller, with Delaware County prosecutors saying they intend to pursue criminal charges.
  • Police scanner traffic included an erroneous report of a gunshot victim as students fled or sheltered, and officials noted a similar false active-shooter report earlier at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
