Viktor Hovland Withdraws From Ryder Cup Singles, Envelope Rule Halves His Match

The injury diagnosis forced use of the rarely invoked envelope rule, leaving Europe two points from retaining the Cup.

Overview

  • Hovland pulled out of his Sunday singles at Bethpage after an MRI confirmed a flare-up of a neck disc bulge that left him unable to rotate his neck.
  • He had received on-course physiotherapy and anti-inflammatories Saturday and then withdrew from the afternoon fourballs after pain worsened on the range.
  • Under the captains’ agreement, Harris English was the U.S. player in Keegan Bradley’s sealed envelope, so the HovlandEnglish match was recorded as a halve.
  • The envelope mechanism, introduced in 1979, has been used only twice previously in Ryder Cup history, in 1991 and 1993.
  • The halved match moved the overall score to 12-5 in Europe’s favor before singles began, meaning Europe needs two points from the remaining 11 matches to retain the trophy.
