Viking-Era Galloway Hoard Embarks on First International Tour
The 1,000-year-old treasure, discovered in Scotland, will debut in Australia with plans for additional global stops.
- The Galloway Hoard, a Viking-age collection of over 5kg of silver, gold, and other materials, was unearthed in 2014 in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.
- The hoard includes rare items such as an Anglo-Saxon cross, bullion, jewelry, and textiles, some of which originated as far away as Central Asia.
- The exhibition, titled 'Treasures of the Viking Age: The Galloway Hoard,' will open at the South Australian Museum in Adelaide from February 8 to July 27, 2025.
- Fragile items, including textiles over 1,000 years old, will be displayed using audiovisual and 3D reconstructions to preserve their integrity.
- Research on the hoard continues to uncover details about its origin, craftsmanship, and the extensive trade networks of the Viking era.
