Vijai Sharma, Architect of the Kyoto Protocol, Dies in the U.S.

A stroke in California ended Sharma’s life just before his ashes are to be immersed in the Ganga.

Overview

  • He suffered a stroke on July 18 while visiting his son in California and was cremated there before plans for a Ganga immersion and Lucknow prayer meeting were announced.
  • From 1995 to 2003 as joint secretary in the environment ministry, Sharma was a principal architect of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol and helped establish its Clean Development Mechanism.
  • He led India’s delegations at COP8 in New Delhi in 2002 and at the 2008 Copenhagen climate conference during his tenure as environment secretary.
  • After serving as environment secretary, Sharma was appointed an expert member of the National Green Tribunal and became Chief Information Commissioner in 2015.
  • He championed the UNFCCC principle of common but differentiated responsibility and as G77 and China coordinator shaped the carbon market rules under the Kyoto Protocol.
