Vigo’s Rondallas Fill Navia Pavilion for Eighth Citywide Showcase

A recent film has revived interest in the century-old folk ensembles.

Overview

  • The free municipal festival opened with a pasacalles along Teixugueiras before performances inside the Navia pavilion.
  • Ensembles from Bembrive, Valadares, Beade and Zamáns took the stage, while Peña O Freixo stood down in mourning for director Xusto Figueroa, who was remembered during the event.
  • Hundreds attended the eighth edition, which organizers had forecast would gather more than 300 participants across the groups.
  • It marked the first time the Navia pavilion hosted the city’s rondallas gathering, organized by the Concello de Vigo.
  • Mayor Abel Caballero praised the intergenerational tradition and credited the new film Rondallas with raising its profile, and a larger meeting in O Porriño follows on Sunday.
