Vigo Water Supply Warning Triggers 48-Hour Ultimatum Over Eiras Dam Valve Failures

An Augas de Galicia inspection found two 1977 outlet valves degraded and a leak that could threaten service to more than 400,000 residents.

Overview

  • Augas de Galicia formally warned the mayor on November 11 that defects at the Eiras dam pose a risk of cut-offs and requested an urgent coordination meeting.
  • Inspectors reported serious damage to two of the four outlet valves feeding the O Casal treatment plant and detected a leak linked to structural deterioration.
  • The agency said the problematic valves date to 1977 and had never been renewed, and it cited earlier difficulties accessing the site to conduct full inspections.
  • Mayor Abel Caballero rejected claims of obstruction, said maintenance has been the Xunta’s responsibility since a 2023 handover, and threatened legal action if alleged obstructors are not identified.
  • Caballero gave the Xunta two days to begin replacements or he will direct Aqualia to do the work and seek to reclaim management of the reservoir, with no repairs confirmed yet.
