Overview
- On Friday, August 21, Vigo mayor Abel Caballero urged immediate reactivation of a small dam on the Oitavén river and said the Xunta of Galicia has ‘‘lost 15 years’’ by blocking the project.
- Caballero said Eiras reservoir cannot meet demand for roughly 600,000 residents and local industry and argued a second upstream reservoir would provide lasting storage.
- Despite current consumption restrictions in Vigo, the mayor pledged to supply neighboring Baiona from Eiras and to boost reserves at the Zamáns system to guarantee O Val Miñor’s water.
- Caballero alerted authorities to a suspected leak in the submarine pipeline from Vigo to Moaña and demanded the Xunta carry out urgent repairs rather than debate competence.
- The Xunta’s environment minister Ángeles Vázquez replied that Eiras ‘‘has no problem’’ after a €2.3 million valve replacement and urged coordinated management, while long-term construction responsibility remains contested and politically charged.
