Vigo Launches Summer Lifeguard Operation for 13 Beaches

The city is financing an 850,000-euro safety programme to strengthen rescue, first aid and beach accessibility through the peak season.

Overview

  • The Concello activated the socorrismo service, which began Monday, June 15, 2026, and will run until September 15 to cover the summer swimming period.
  • The operation deploys 130 professionals in total, including 70 beach lifeguards, 12 pool lifeguards at Samil’s four pools, 25 Policía Local officers and 20 cleaning staff.
  • On-site resources include an ambulance, a rapid-response vehicle and 15 defibrillators, and the programme continues a second-year jet-ski patrol based at Samil that does not cover the Islas Cíes.
  • The city is putting up the full 850,000 euros for the programme and Mayor Abel Caballero publicly stated that the Xunta de Galicia is not contributing to the cost.
  • The plan aims to speed rescue and medical response, offer support for bathing by people with reduced mobility and concentrate Samil as the operational hub for the wider network of beach posts.
