Vigo Airport’s Low-Visibility Landing System Downgraded as Fog Triggers New Wave of Diversions

Aena says it is working with Enaire to restore higher-category landings on runway 19, with reduced capability expected to persist until October 6.

Overview

  • The instrument landing system at Vigo’s Peinador airport has been operating at Category I since around September 22, increasing required runway visual range from about 300 meters to roughly 500 meters.
  • Friday’s conditions led to at least four disrupted flights, including an Air Horizont charter from Glasgow diverted to Santiago, an Air Europa service that returned to Madrid, and Vueling and Iberia flights routed to Lavacolla.
  • Operational strain continued Saturday with eight additional diversions affecting Madrid services, while only a Binter Tenerife arrival was able to land during the morning window.
  • Aena has acknowledged an incident affecting the anti-fog/ILS system and says calibration flights are underway with Enaire as repairs continue on runway 19.
  • Authorities indicate the reduced ILS status will remain at least until Tuesday, and they hope to recover higher-category capability then, as passengers report delays and inconsistent information during diversions.
