Vigil Marks Jack Sullivan’s Fifth Birthday as Stepfather Rejects ‘Wandered Into Woods’ Theory

Police say the major-crimes investigation remains active.

Overview

  • About 40 people gathered outside the RCMP detachment in Stellarton, N.S., for a candlelight vigil nearly six months after Jack, 5, and Lilly, 6, disappeared.
  • Stepfather Daniel Martell said he does not believe the children are in the woods and stated he is working closely with RCMP major-crimes investigators.
  • Martell said he previously took a polygraph and passed, a claim RCMP have not confirmed, and he walked back earlier comments suggesting the children’s mother was involved.
  • RCMP officials reiterated the case has not gone cold, citing ongoing work that includes more than 860 tips, 8,060 video files and continuing forensic follow-up.
  • Two human-remains-detection dogs searched a 40-kilometre area in September without finding remains, and neighbour reports of a vehicle early on May 2 remain disputed by police.
