Vietnam Closes Airports and Evacuates Residents as Typhoon Kajiki Nears Landfall Today

Officials cite Yagi-level risk with forecasts of extreme rain, storm surge and landslides.

  • Landfall is forecast on Aug 25 with the eye projected between Thanh Hoa and Nghe An around 9am GMT, following the storm’s westward track across the uth ChChina Sea.
  • Authorities have slated more than 325,500 people for relocation with nearly 30,000 already moved by dawn, and plans cover over 586,000 residents across central provinces.
  • Airports in Thanh Hoa and Quang Binh are closed, Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet have canceled dozens of flights, and schools and coastal activities are suspended.
  • Sustained winds are near 166 km/h with some agencies flagging possible further strengthening, while the JTWC warns of a weakening trend near the continental shelf; waves up to 9.5 m and dangerous storm surge are expected.
  • China’s Hainan island took pre-emptive measures as Kajiki passed south, with Sanya issuing a red alert, evacuating about 20,000 people and shutting businesses and public transport.
