Overview

  • The Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal approved a 3% increase in MPs’ salaries and allowances, raising Premier Jacinta Allan’s total package to $512,972 including a $64,475 expense allowance.
  • Allan now trails only Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, whose $620,000 salary remains the highest among Australian politicians.
  • Deputy Premier Ben Carroll’s pay will rise to $236,662, Opposition Leader Brad Battin’s to $409,107 and backbench MPs will earn $211,972.
  • The tribunal’s rise is slightly below the Fair Work Commission’s 3.5% minimum wage increase set to take effect Tuesday.
  • Earlier this year, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and New South Wales ended multi-year salary freezes through independent tribunals and approved their own pay hikes.
