Victim’s Son Urges Alabama to Halt Execution of Geoffrey West as Date Nears

The governor says state law requires carrying out the death sentence.

Overview

  • Geoffrey Todd West is scheduled to be executed by nitrogen hypoxia on Thursday, Sept. 25, at William C. Holman Correctional Facility.
  • Will Berry, who was 11 when his mother Margaret Parrish Berry was killed in 1997, wrote to Gov. Kay Ivey asking her to stop the execution and joined advocates in delivering a petition to her office.
  • Berry and West exchanged letters in which West expressed remorse and Berry offered forgiveness, but prison officials denied their request to meet in person, citing security rules that bar victim–offender visits.
  • Gov. Ivey told Berry in a Sept. 11 letter that she is obligated to enforce Alabama law imposing death for the most egregious murders, and the attorney general’s office said West’s sentence is due after 26 years on death row.
  • West was convicted of capital murder for shooting Margaret Berry during a robbery at an Etowah County gas station, with jurors voting 10–2 to recommend death after prosecutors said $250 was taken from the store’s cash container.
