Victims' Group Condemns Public Funding for Radio Show Hosted by Former ETA Leader

Covite demands the show be canceled with its €53,000 grant withdrawn.

Overview

  • Covite said ex-ETA political chief Mikel Albisu, known as “Mikel Antza,” hosts Irakurrieran, a weekly Basque-language literary program.
  • The show is produced by the Basque Writers Association (Euskal Idazleen Elkartea) and recorded and aired by Bizkaia Irratia, a station owned by the Diocese of Bilbao.
  • A May 2025 provincial resolution recorded €53,000 in subsidies for activities that include the show, shared with another radio program, in Spain’s national grants database.
  • Covite petitioned the Diputación de Bizkaia, Bizkaia Irratia and the writers’ association to withdraw the broadcast and the public funding.
  • The association argued Albisu has shown no public remorse or critical review of his ETA past, and no cancellation or grant withdrawal had been reported.
