Vetrimaaran Shuts Grass Root Film Company, Names Bad Girl as Final Production

He cites mounting financial strain from borrowing as the decisive factor.

Overview

  • At a Sept. 1 press meet in Chennai, Vetrimaaran said he is exiting producing and will close Grass Root Film Company after Bad Girl.
  • Bad Girl received a U/A certificate after revising-committee review and is set for a Sept. 5 theatrical release in India.
  • He said producing required constant vigilance over public reactions and cast or crew statements, which he believes directly affect a film’s revenue.
  • His other production Manushi faced CBFC objections and a Madras High Court order mandating 25 cuts and 12 modifications before clearance.
  • Directed by Varsha Bharath and starring Anjali Sivaraman, Bad Girl won the NETPAC award at Rotterdam; in a new interview, Sivaraman acknowledged the teaser backlash but said she respects differing opinions.
