Veteran NASCAR Crew Chief Ryan Pemberton Passes Away at 54

Pemberton's Legacy Remembered: From Early Days with Larry Pearson to Controversial 1990 Cup Series with Mark Martin

  • Ryan Pemberton, a veteran NASCAR crew chief, passed away at the age of 54. He had a long career in NASCAR, starting in 1988 and serving as crew chief in 561 race starts over 16 years.
  • Pemberton's first stint as a crew chief came in 1995 when he paired with Larry Pearson and finished 6th in the points standing in a series now known as Xfinity.
  • Pemberton worked closely with Mark Martin, a driver for Roush Racing. They came close to winning the Cup Series in 1990 but were penalized for an illegal carburetor spacer on Martin's car, resulting in a points deduction and a hefty fine.
  • In one of his last interviews, Pemberton recalled the incident and criticized Richard Childress Racing for their role in the post-race inspection that led to the penalty.
  • Pemberton's brother, Robin Pemberton, also had a significant career in NASCAR, serving as a crew chief and later as NASCAR Vice President of Competition.
