• Hospital authorities said he died around 4:30 pm on September 11 in Aluva after acute respiratory illness and age-related complications, following weeks of treatment and ventilator support for a chest infection.
• Across six decades in public life, he served as Kerala Assembly Speaker, Agriculture Minister in the A. K. Antony cabinet, KPCC president and a long-time UDF convener.
• He was elected from Perumbavoor for four consecutive terms from 1982 to 2001, having earlier become municipal chair at age 26.
• Leaders across parties, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, A. K. Antony, K. C. Venugopal and V. D. Satheeshan, hailed his consensus-driven leadership and calm stewardship.
