Overview

  • Senior former ministers Taj Mohiuddin and Ghulam Mohammad Saroori formally rejoined the Congress on June 27 at its Srinagar headquarters under the welcome of AICC general secretary Naseer Hussain and J&K chief Tariq Hamid Karra.
  • Both leaders had left Congress alongside Ghulam Nabi Azad in August 2022, contested the 2024 Lok Sabha and assembly elections unsuccessfully on DPAP tickets and as independents, and subsequently exited the party.
  • In April, Ghulam Nabi Azad dissolved all grassroots units of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party after it failed to win any assembly seats and was outpolled by NOTA in several constituencies.
  • Congress leaders describe the comebacks as a major morale and organisational boost as the party rebuilds its base in the Union Territory ahead of anticipated assembly elections.
  • Ghulam Nabi Azad now stands politically isolated following the rapid decline and effective collapse of his breakaway DPAP venture.
