Vervet Monkeys Roaming Near O'Fallon Park Spur St. Louis Search

City health officials are coordinating trained teams to trap the vervets for transfer to a certified facility.

  • Officials confirm multiple monkeys remain at large near O'Fallon Park, with the exact number unknown after early reports suggested four.
  • A St. Louis Zoo primate expert identified the animals as vervet monkeys, commonly called green monkeys.
  • The monkeys’ origin is unknown, and private ownership of primates is illegal under St. Louis city ordinance.
  • Animal Care & Control searched the area on Jan. 8 and Jan. 9 without success, and partner agencies will conduct capture efforts and relocation.
