Verstappen Urges Pirelli to Drop C6 After Baku Pole as Supplier Defends Soft

Pirelli says the compound should be roughly two tenths quicker in qualifying, leaving the dispute over tyre choice unresolved.

Overview

  • Max Verstappen took Azerbaijan GP pole in 1:41.117 on the C6 but said red-flag interruptions forced him off his preferred medium for Q3.
  • He called the C6 “just an inferior tyre” and argued it has not worked at Monaco, Imola or Montreal, urging Pirelli to stop bringing it.
  • Verstappen said the soft offers no useful references for setup or simulations and suggested mandating use of all three compounds to ensure two stops.
  • Pirelli’s Mario Isola maintained the C6 is theoretically about 0.2s quicker, adding that several drivers felt more confident on mediums in Saturday’s conditions.
  • Despite nominating softer tyres to widen strategies, Pirelli still expects a one-stop in Baku with medium-to-hard as the quickest route.
