Vermont Man Accused of Dragging Trooper Captured in Connecticut

Police traced Mason Payne after a Holyoke traffic stop led to a safety-ended chase into Connecticut.

Overview

  • Mason Payne, 23, was taken into custody without incident around 5 p.m. Wednesday at a Stamford hotel, authorities said.
  • A subsequent search of his room and vehicle turned up two firearms, according to police.
  • Police had been searching for Payne following a reported armed domestic incident in Dover, Vermont, earlier Tuesday.
  • During a traffic stop near Exit 15 on I-91 in Holyoke around 10 p.m., he allegedly dragged a Massachusetts state trooper several feet; the trooper was not seriously injured.
  • The pursuit topped 100 mph as K-9 and Air Wing units responded, a GPS tag attempt failed, and stop sticks were deployed before troopers ended the chase near highway work crews for safety.
