Verizon Outage Disrupts Wireless Service Nationwide, Triggers 911 Warnings

The company has not disclosed a cause or a restoration timeline.

Overview

  • Verizon confirmed a widespread failure of wireless voice and data services as reports surged around noon ET on Wednesday.
  • Downdetector recorded peak Verizon problem reports in the roughly 170,000–185,000 range, concentrated in major cities including New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, and Seattle.
  • Many smartphones displayed “SOS” or emergency-only status, and emergency officials in Washington, D.C., and New York City warned some Verizon users might be unable to reach 911.
  • T-Mobile said its network was operating normally but noted customers may be unable to connect with Verizon users, and smaller spikes for AT&T and T-Mobile were likely collateral effects.
  • Some users also reported issues with Verizon’s network-status page and home internet service, while certain Verizon MVNOs such as Visible appeared less affected.
