Overview

  • The first image mosaic spans around 10 million galaxies along with distant nebulae and stars in the southern sky.
  • Initial instrument tests led to the discovery of over 2,000 previously unrecorded asteroids.
  • A three-mirror optical system paired with a 3.2-gigapixel camera delivers unprecedented wide-field, high-resolution observations.
  • At full capacity the facility will survey the entire southern sky every three nights, generating about 20 terabytes of data each night.
  • Funded by the US National Science Foundation with contributions from Italian partners, the observatory honors Vera Rubin’s pioneering work on dark matter.
