Overview

  • On August 6 a 40-foot palm tree unexpectedly collapsed onto Adela Magaña as she sat on a bench at Golf N’ Stuff mini golf course in Ventura, California.
  • Family members and bystanders lifted the tree off her and used a belt as a tourniquet while others called 911, and Ventura City Fire Department personnel provided on-scene treatment before transporting her to Ventura County Medical Center.
  • Surgeons determined that irreparable nerve and vascular damage required a below-shoulder amputation of her right arm during surgery on August 7.
  • Golf N’ Stuff’s Ventura location has been closed for precautionary reasons pending review, and general manager Kevin Martin says the venue will consult a licensed arborist before reopening.
  • Magaña’s family says she remains unable to speak but can nod and now faces a long road of recovery involving further operations, prosthetic fitting and rehabilitation.
