Venice Weighs Raising Day-Tripper Entry Fee to €30

Officials present higher or demand-based fees as a way to curb overcrowding, to cover the city’s roughly €100 million annual upkeep, subject to national government approval.

Overview

  • Budget and taxation councillor Michele Zuin said on Monday the city is exploring extending the fee to more of the year and raising the daily charge to as much as €30 with some talk of €50.
  • Mayor Simone Venturini has pushed for a demand-based surge pricing model that would raise the fee on the busiest days rather than only a fixed higher rate.
  • The charge applies only to day-trippers, offers early-booking discounts and exemptions such as for children under 14.
  • Venice’s 2026 pilot ran on selected days from April 3 to July 26 and raised more than €5.2 million from nearly 680,000 tickets, a result city officials cite to justify tougher measures.
  • Any change for 2027 must be negotiated with the Italian government and could shift visitor timing, affect local businesses and raise enforcement and equity questions for residents and tourists.
