Venice Imposes Holiday Night Restrictions on Music, Fireworks and Drink Sales

City hall frames the measures as a response to past disturbances, answering residents' calls for quiet.

Overview

  • An ordinance bans music events, fireworks, terrace drink service and roaming food or drink sales from 22:00 on Dec. 24 in designated areas.
  • The Christmas Eve rules apply within 500 meters of churches and other religious sites and on selected squares in Mestre on the mainland.
  • Food retailers must close at 22:00 on Dec. 24 and may reopen at 06:00 on Dec. 25 under the temporary holiday order.
  • Separate New Year's Eve rules prohibit sales of drinks in glass or plastic bottles and in cans from Dec. 31 at 19:00 to Jan. 1 at 06:00, and street consumption from glass is barred.
  • The city expects large crowds on New Year's Eve and warns that pedestrian movement could be limited, with broader visitor management continuing in 2026 through a €10 day-entry fee on 60 selected days.
