Overview

  • The Venice Appeals Court overturned a 2018 civil dismissal and ordered the professor’s widow and three children to receive €4 million.
  • The court apportioned €2.2 million to the Municipal Transport Company of Venice and €1.8 million to two private boat operators.
  • In August 2013 a gondola collided with a Vaporetto near the Rialto Bridge, killing the German law professor and injuring his daughter.
  • In 2015 three Vaporetto drivers, a water taxi operator and a gondolier were given suspended sentences for gross negligence in connection with the crash.
  • The widow has signaled plans to challenge the award, meaning the ruling is not yet final and could face further appeal.
