Venezuelan TPS Protections End Friday Night as DHS Schedules South Sudan Termination for January 5

Only a small group that re-registered early in 2025 keeps work permission through October 2026.

Overview

  • TPS for Venezuelans designated in 2021 is set to lapse at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, November 7, removing protection for most beneficiaries.
  • Roughly 250,000 Venezuelans are expected to lose protection at the cutoff, following a separate Supreme Court decision that already ended status for the 2023 cohort.
  • USCIS guidance says those who re-registered between January 17 and February 5, 2025 retain valid documentation and work authorization until October 2026.
  • Attorneys and advocates warn of immediate effects including loss of work authorization, driver’s licenses and health coverage, as well as increased risk of detention and deportation.
  • DHS confirmed TPS for South Sudan will end effective January 5, 2026, with CBP indicating return assistance may include a courtesy plane ticket and a $1,000 departure bonus.
