Overview

• On June 18, Homeland Security Investigations and FBI agents stopped Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco under an active immigration warrant during a traffic stop near his Bellevue, Nebraska, home.
• According to the Department of Justice, the 30-year-old Venezuelan slammed an agent’s head into the pavement and applied a chokehold while resisting arrest.
• After the altercation, he ran on foot but was tracked down at his apartment and taken into custody without further incident.
• He was charged on June 19 with one count of attempted murder of a federal officer and one count of assault of a federal officer, carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
• U.S. Magistrate Judge Ryan C. Carson ordered Hurtado-Cariaco detained and set his preliminary and detention hearing for June 24, 2025.
