Venceremos Picks Ronald Atencio to Lead 2026 Ticket as Internal Rifts Surface

ONPE rules leave the winning three-person slate fixed following a 39–31 delegates vote.

Overview

  • Delegates from Voces del Pueblo, Nuevo Perú and allied groups chose the ticket of Ronald Atencio, Elena Rivera Huamán and Alberto Quintanilla by 39–31 in a 70-vote assembly.
  • Nuevo Perú leader Verónika Mendoza said her party will respect the alliance decision and support Atencio’s presidential bid.
  • Defeated contender Vicente Alanoca alleged discriminatory practices in the process, a claim leaders present disputed; Quintanilla urged him to retract and said no fees were charged to candidates.
  • Atencio said the formula cannot be altered under ONPE rules, so Alanoca cannot join the ticket and could instead seek a Senate seat for Puno.
  • Atencio, known for defending Guillermo Bermejo after his 15-year sentence for terrorist affiliation, said he will review whether to continue that legal role as he formalizes his campaign.
