Vay Launches 'Teledriving' Service in Las Vegas
The German Startup Aims to Redefine Urban Mobility with Remote Human Drivers
- German startup Vay has launched a 'teledriving' service in Las Vegas, where a remote human driver delivers electric short-term rental cars to customers and collects them after the rental.
- The service, which is currently available around the University of Nevada Las Vegas and the city's arts district, rents out cars by the minute.
- Vay's CEO, Thomas von der Ohe, stated that the company's approach presents an alternative to driverless mobility and sees a 'massive use case' for remote driving functions.
- Vay has raised about $110 million from investors including Sweden's Kinnevik, Coatue and France's Eurazeo, and has conducted tests on European and U.S. roads with remote drivers and no one behind the wheel.
- Over time, the startup plans to gradually introduce autonomous features as it learns from the cameras included on its vehicles.
