Vatican to Publish Pope Francisco’s Personal Notebooks

Presented and annotated by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández the volume is set for a coordinated global release on 24 November to offer new access to the late pope’s interior life.

Overview

  • The Libreria Editrice Vaticana announced Monday that it will publish 'El diario personal del papa Francisco', a volume based on Jorge Mario Bergoglio’s notes spanning 20 December 1992 to 18 August 2024.
  • Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández compiled, presents and adds commentary to the texts, and the Vatican described the material as of 'exceptional value and importance' for understanding the pontiff.
  • The book will be released simultaneously in five languages on 24 November and distributed in 94 countries, with LEV handling the Italian edition, Penguin Random House the Spanish, English and Portuguese editions, and Albin Michel the French edition.
  • LEV will present the title to international editors at the Frankfurt Book Fair on 7–11 October as part of a coordinated publicity plan timed to follow Pope León XIV’s November visit to Argentina.
  • The publication departs from past papal practice of destroying unedited private papers and could shape how scholars and the public judge Francisco’s legacy while prompting renewed debate over Vatican curation of intimate documents.
