Vatican Confirms Pope Leo’s First Foreign Trip to Turkey and Lebanon in Late November

The itinerary signals a push on Orthodox relations with a pastoral message for Lebanon.

Overview

  • The Vatican set the schedule for Turkey from November 27–30 and Lebanon from November 30–December 2.
  • In Turkey, the pope will make a pilgrimage to Iznik to mark the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea and is expected to meet Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
  • In Lebanon, he plans to commemorate victims of the Beirut port explosion and to voice appeals for peace and support for Middle East Christians.
  • This will be Pope Leo’s first trip outside Italy since his May 8 election, and he is the first U.S. pope.
  • The journey advances visits that Pope Francis had hoped to undertake but could not because of health and regional instability.
