Fifty-eight percent of Americans think the government should do more to solve the country’s problems, marking the highest such share in 33 years, according to a new poll.

Overview

  • Over 80% of adults say democracy is under attack (49%) or being tested (36%) according to a June 1 CNN-SSRS poll.
  • Just 40% of respondents view Republicans as having strong leaders and 36% believe they can govern effectively, while only 16% and 19% respectively express confidence in Democratic leadership, and 76% of independents say neither party is capable.
  • Republicans hold a seven-point advantage over Democrats on managing the economy, marking the narrowest lead for the GOP on that issue since 2022.
  • A record 36% of surveyed adults believe abortion should be legal in all circumstances, with another 35% supporting legality in some cases.
  • Nearly three-quarters of respondents say growing racial diversity does more to enrich than threaten American culture.
