Vasai Teacher Arrested After 13-Year-Old Dies Following Alleged ‘100 Sit-Ups’ Punishment

Police cite preliminary autopsy findings and say the probe could widen to the school as final forensic results are awaited.

Waliv Police registered an FIR and arrested teacher Mamta Yadav after a Class 6 student died days after allegedly being made to do 100 sit-ups with her schoolbag for arriving late on November 8.
The case has been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder (Section 105) and cruelty toward a child (Section 75), with inquiries led locally by PSI Hanif Sheikh.
Preliminary post-mortem findings note pulmonary oedema and splenomegaly, and police say the girl had anaemia, while a final cause of death is pending chemical analysis.
The student’s family told investigators they believe the punishment triggered medical complications, and the child died on November 14 after being shifted to Mumbai’s JJ Hospital.
School officials say the teacher has been suspended and contend they had earlier advised the family to seek medical care, as a Mumbai lawyer petitions the Bombay High Court to expedite the probe and examine possible action against the school.
