Overview
- The Vancouver Police Department has positioned four new cameras at Main and Hastings and four at Carrall and Hastings to deter violence and support criminal investigations.
- The installations replace two public safety trailers deployed in April following a knife attack on an officer and the assault and death of a 92-year-old man.
- Footage will capture public spaces only without audio or facial recognition and will automatically overwrite after four days unless preserved for investigations.
- The Downtown Eastside has seen 225 violent incidents, including 14 robberies, 115 assaults and one homicide near the new camera sites since January.
- VPD officials say consultations with residents, business owners and community advocates indicate widespread support for the surveillance expansion.
