Overview

  • Boelter donned a police uniform and drove an SUV equipped with lights to fatally shoot former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband in Brooklyn Park and injure Senator John Hoffman and his wife in Champlin on June 14.
  • More than 100 officers and SWAT teams combed rural Sibley County before Boelter surrendered to authorities by crawling from a wooded area near his home late on June 15.
  • Prosecutors have charged Boelter with two counts each of second-degree murder and attempted murder in state court and he is expected to face separate federal charges that could carry the death penalty.
  • Law enforcement found three AK-47 rifles, a 9-mm handgun and notebooks listing dozens of Democratic lawmakers and abortion rights advocates after discovering that Boelter had visited multiple legislators’ homes for reconnaissance.
  • Governor Tim Walz decried the attack as a politically motivated assassination and lawmakers including Senator Amy Klobuchar are calling for enhanced security measures for public officials.
