Overview
- North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue crews attended a transit van that was well alight on the A1 hard shoulder near Dishforth and extinguished the fire using hose reels.
- The van was destroyed by the blaze and the fire spread to an adjacent grass verge of roughly 10m by 3m before crews put it out.
- Police and highways officers kept one lane closed while lanes two and three passed the scene, prompting severe queues and delays of more than 40 minutes on the southbound A1(M).
- Authorities have not released further information about the separate collision at the scene and that part of the incident remains under investigation.
- The A1 is a major north–south trunk route, so this combined incident has produced prolonged disruption and drivers are advised to allow extra travel time.
