Overview
- A highways worker was struck and died on the southbound M23 at Junction 9 near Pound Hill shortly before 1am on Wednesday while working on the carriageway.
- Sussex Police say the driver, 38-year-old Vilius Domarkas of no fixed address, was arrested at the scene and charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
- Domarkas appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday and was remanded in custody to appear at Lewes Crown Court on 6 August.
- The victim has been named as 65-year-old Anthony Howe of Kent and police say they have informed his next of kin; a fundraiser has been set up by family and friends.
- Police have opened an inquiry called Operation Oakcross and are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to email collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk as investigators build their case.
