Overview

  • A jury of nine women and three men cleared Shayne Hill of causing death by dangerous driving after four and a half hours of deliberation at Norwich Crown Court.
  • Hill admitted causing death by careless driving in the June 2022 collision that killed 54-year-old cyclist Cheryl Tye.
  • He will return to court on October 3, 2025, to be sentenced for the lesser charge, which carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment.
  • Prosecutors told jurors Hill was distracted for about ten seconds by WhatsApp photos on his phone before ploughing into Tye at about 60 mph on the A11 near Roudham.
  • Breckland Cycling Club and other organisers have suspended time trials on the A11 and launched a review of safety measures for dual carriageway cycling events since the crash.
