- Van Brett Watkins, who was imprisoned for his role in the 1999 murder plot of Cherica Adams, has died at age 63.
- Watkins was serving a sentence of more than 50 years for second-degree murder, conspiracy and other charges.
- The murder plot was orchestrated by then-Carolina Panthers player Rae Carruth, who paid Watkins to kill his pregnant girlfriend, Cherica Adams.
- Adams was shot in her car and died weeks later. Her son was born by emergency Caesarean section with disabilities and was raised by Adams’ mother.
- Carruth was acquitted of first-degree murder but convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and other charges. He was sentenced to 18 to 24 years in prison and was released in 2018.
