Valve's Deadlock Overhauls Map, Adds Six Heroes and Breaks Concurrent-Player Record

Valve is using staged, player-voted hero drops to test changes as the invite-only game remains under active development.

Overview

  • Deadlock received the City Never Sleeps update on Tuesday, September 29, and SteamDB recorded an all-time peak of about 228,000 concurrent players shortly after the patch went live.
  • The update remakes the central map into three themed lane environments and four distinct districts, and it replaces the game's neutral creeps with new 'Haunts' such as Specimen, Gutter Ghouls, and Barrel Mimics.
  • Valve added six new heroes—Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba, and Violet—and will unlock them by player vote in a staged rollout of two heroes per week beginning the Friday after the update.
  • City Never Sleeps also bundles broad quality-of-life work with over 10,000 non-ping voice lines, clearer HUD and shop interfaces, practice bots, expanded ping options, and new accessibility features like custom UI colors and auto movement/firing.
  • Valve says Deadlock remains invite-only and actively in development as the team continues to refine progression, hero and hideout customization systems, and experimental features while watching player feedback and metrics tracked by services like SteamDB.
