Valve to End Steam Support for macOS Big Sur on October 15

The update reflects Valve’s need to run Steam’s embedded Chromium engine on macOS versions that still receive security patches.

Overview

  • Valve announced that Steam will cease functioning on macOS 11 Big Sur after October 15, 2025.
  • Future updates to the Steam client will require macOS 12 or later due to dependencies on an embedded Chromium framework.
  • macOS 11 lost official security updates and technical support from Apple in 2023, leaving users vulnerable to unpatched exploits.
  • Valve is urging all remaining Big Sur users to upgrade their operating system to preserve access to Steam and their game libraries.
  • The change coincides with Valve’s rollout of a native Apple Silicon beta and preparations for the eventual phaseout of Rosetta 2.
