Valve Confirms Development of 'Steam Deck 2', Highlights Requirement for Generational Leap in Performance

Valve Leverages Lessons from First-Gen Handheld PC to Develop Next-Gen Steam Deck 2; Company Waits for Technological Advancement for Significant Performance Improvement and Wallet-Friendly Pricing

  • Valve has confirmed the development of 'Steam Deck 2', following the successful market reception of its first-generation handheld PC, Steam Deck.
  • The company is holding out for significant advancements in technology to support a dramatic leap in performance and cost-effectiveness before the new device's launch.
  • The current generation's AMD Sephiroth chip, a 6nm die-shrink version of the 7nm AMD Aerith APU used in the first Steam Deck, does not fulfill Valve's performance expectations for the second generation. Therefore, there may be a wait of two to three years until the right chip is available.
  • Apart from performance, major factors that Valve is considering for the second generation hardware include power envelope, battery life, device weight, and affordability.
  • In the meantime, Valve has introduced an OLED version of the original Steam Deck, which addresses two of the most common complaints about the first-generation device: display quality and battery life. Moreover, it also benefits from a better grip, less heat generation, quieter operation, and a longer charging cable.
