València Plans Temporary Sorolla Display at City Museum as Palace Tender Remains on Hold

Officials aim to put the paintings on view before the legislature ends because the palace renovation is paused by a procurement appeal.

Overview

  • Mayor María José Catalá and regional president Juanfran Pérez Llorca agreed on Jan. 7 to seek a provisional venue, likely the Museo de la Ciudad, to exhibit Sorolla's works.
  • The Palacio de Comunicaciones remains designated as the Hispanic Society of America’s European headquarters once renovations are completed.
  • The rehabilitation contract is provisionally suspended after an appeal by the Valencian architects’ association to the national procurement tribunal.
  • The transfer from New York still requires signing the loan and transport agreement, with December talks between the Generalitat and the Hispanic Society restarting the process.
  • Officials said they expect the appeal to be resolved soon, and prior agreements envisage up to 220 works traveling to València under a project budgeted at about €17.1 million.
